The Hong Kong Association of Sexuality Educators, Researchers & Therapists Ltd.
The Hong Kong Association of Sexuality Educators, Researchers & Therapists Limited (HKASERT) is a non-profit, interdisciplinary professional organization.? HKASERT members include sex therapists, sexuality educators, doctors, social workers, allied health professionals, marriage and family counsellors and therapists, as well as students in relevant professional disciplines. These individuals share an interest in promoting understanding of human sexuality and healthy sexual behaviour
The objects for which the Association is established are:
- To promote professional development in the area of human sexuality.
- To promote sexual health by the development and advancement of the fields of sexuality education, research and therapy.
- To provide professional education and certification of sex educators and therapists, as well as supervisors who are authorised to supervise sex therapists in training.
- To advance the scientific study of all aspects of human sexuality.
- To accredit professionals in sexuality education, research and therapy by creating and maintaining increasingly rigorous standards for ethics, academic preparation and applied skills.
- To promote the exchange of ideas, information and resources about human sexuality.
- To arrange, provide for or to participate in conferences, seminars, workshops, public meetings, professional meetings, lectures and classes on human sexuality.
- To arrange, provide for or to participate in providing for scientific research in sexology.
- To initiate and or support the publication of professional and educational material on human sexuality.
- To promote community knowledge and acceptance of human sexual behaviour and attitudes.
- To promote and or provide information on services available in the area of sexuality.
- To promote the concept of equality and the right of the individual to make choices about his / her own sexuality without infringing the rights of others.
- To promote philosophical and political debate in the area of human sexuality.
- To be active in promoting legislative changes where appropriate.
- To initiate or sponsor any other activities which relate to the objectives of the Association.
Membership Types
Certified Member
1. Sex Therapist
- To have completed at least 120 hours of education/training in the Association’s approved programs in sex therapy, and have at least 20 hours of practice under supervision.?
- To be currently working in an area related to sex therapy (work may be paid or voluntary).
- To engage in at least 20 hours of professional development activities a year.
- To spend a minimum of 10 hours in the Association approved mutual learning groups for each 12 month period.
- To meet the full requirements for competency in the areas of “guidelines on competency of HKASERT Members” as authorized by the HKASERT Board.
- To be bound by the guidelines on the professional code of ethics as prescribed by the HKASERT Board.
- To be allowed to use the title, “HKASERT Certified Sex Therapist.
- At the conclusion of every five years of certified membership, a new membership application must be made.
2. ?Sex Educator
- To have completed at least 90 hours of education/training in the Association’s approved programs in sexuality education, and have at least 20 hours of practice under supervision.?
- To be currently working in an area related to sexuality education (work may be paid or voluntary).
- To engage in at least 20 hours of professional development activities a year.
- To meet the full requirements for competency in the areas of “guidelines on competency of HKASERT Members” as authorized by the HKASERT Board.
- To be bound by the guidelines on the professional code of ethics as prescribed by the HKASERT Board.
- To be allowed to use the title, “HKASERT Certified Sex Educator”.
- At the conclusion of every five years of certified membership, a new membership application must be made.
General Member
- to be currently working in an area related to sexuality (work may be paid or voluntary).
- to meet the full requirements for competency in the areas of “guidelines on competency of HKASERT Members” as authorized by the HKASERT’s Board of Directors.
- to be bound by the guidelines on professional code of ethics as prescribed by the HKASERT’s Board of Directors.
- to engage in at least 20 hours of professional development activities a year.
- at the conclusion of every five years of general membership, a new membership application must be made.
Associate Member
An associate member is a Member who has a working, qualified or bona fide interest in sexuality and sexual health, and who agrees to abide by the Association’s ethical standards.
Life Member
To recognize his/her contributions to the Association and with approval from the HKASERT’s Board of Directors, a currently retired or non-practicing certified Member or general Member may be granted with a life membership.
